Welcome to Week 8: Action Learning Projects

3 03 2011

Spring break is almost here!

It’s a good time to pause, reflect, and take stock of what we’ve accomplished so far this semester and what our goals are for the second half of the course.

At this point, we’ve completed the first of three class projects – Literary Quality of YA Lit – and we’re well into our second – Issues and Trends in YA Lit. We’ve also begun our third project – Virtual Author Study by reading Marchetta’s Finnkin of the Rock — and I know that many of you are focusing in on our fourth project – the Action Learning Project.

To learn more about the Action Learning Project and see some exemplars from ECI 521 alums, check out http://bookhenge2011.wikispaces.com/Week+8+Transmission When you do come up with an idea for your ALP, please do add it to our ALP Data Base at http://bookhenge2011.wikispaces.com/Action+Learning+Projects We can all then keep an eye out for resources for your project while we’re researching our own.

If you’d like to meet with me to discuss your work in the course so far and brainstorm your ALP, just let me know. We could easily meet in the Bookhenge, via Skype, or face-to-face in the actual world.

Tech Tip

If you don’t like the Twitter interface and reading through the #Bookhenge tweets, consider registering for the Bookhenge Daily and have an attractive eNewsletter with all the tweets delivered to your email inbox each day. To subscribe for email updates, go to this site and click on “Subscribe.”

Activities and Action Items

1. No class on Monday, March 7th. If you would like to use this time to meet with me, I’m available.

2. No RAP due the week of March 7th.

3. Read and respond with a blog post to our reading on multicultural literature by Friday, March 11, 11:59 pm.

4. Multicultural Book Club presentation is due for class on Monday, March 14. Remember that whatever you do must be something that you can engage the class in within Second Life. A bookcast, dramatic performance, some type of Reader Response, and many other ideas are possible. Someone mentioned VoiceThread but that’s not really going to work in Second Life. An audio slide show would give an similar effect and work in Second Life. If you have an idea and you’d like to brainstorm, just let me know.

5. ALP Proposal is due on Tuesday, March 15, 11:59 pm The ALP Proposal is a template in Google Docs. Just search the Public Templates for “ECI 521” (no quotes) to access it.

6. If you’re completing the Lit Review-Lite for the “A” grade, then add your paper as a blog post by Tuesday, March 15, 11:59 pm. Please don’t be concerned over any formatting issues. Do your best to follow your chosen academic formatting. If you’re not familiar with an academic style, then I’d recommend APA. Here’s a good resource — The Purdue OWL.

Sorry to be so late in responding, Linda. I should have gotten a site update.

You’ll find exemplar multimedia reports under Assessments — http://bookhenge2011.wikispaces.com/Assessments

There’s also a Diigo list at http://www.diigo.com/list/criscrissman/ALP-Multimedia-Reports
